Mortality
My friend Bob died today. He found out in October that he had a brain tumor, and now he's gone. It seems like it's been a long time, and no time at all. He was always bigger than life, and I suppose he always will be now.

"Death is just another path, one that we all must take.
The grey rain curtain of this world rolls back and then you see it...
white shores...and beyond, a far green country, beneath a swift sunrise."

Oh, I'm so sorry! Make Seth give you a big hug and tell him it's from me.

I often find myself watching the movie Wit this time of year, and this bit always stays with me:

(discussing the proper punctuation of Donne's holy sonnet six)

And death shall be no more, comma, Death thou shalt die. Nothing but a breath, a comma, separates life from life everlasting. Very simple, really. With the original punctuation restored, death is no longer something to act out on a stage, with exclamation marks. It is a comma. A pause. In this way, the uncompromising way, one learns something from the poem, wouldn’t you say? Life, death, soul, God, past, present… not insuperable barriers. Not semicolons. Just a comma.

I don't think I've ever seen Wit. I'll definitely have to look that one up. I really like that quote.

*hugs* because I don't really have anything that I can say, but I'll be thinking about you.

Thanks. I've been meaning to post on your journal about all the travails and triumphs you've had lately. It's been quite the rollercoaster this year!

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. Sometimes it really does seem like the good die young. At least Bob is free of pain and at peace now. I'm sure all his friends and family will keep him alive in their thoughts and memories. He sounds like someone who would be impossible to forget.

He really made quite an impression on everyone he met. The local SciFi group put a picture of him on their webpage: http://www.misfit.org/

His wake has been set up for this Sunday, and in accordance to his wishes everyone is supposed to wear bright colours and extravagant garb.

They had their wedding at a local hotel, and encouraged their friends to come dressed up in garb (they were dressed up as Trolls -- his nickname was Roadkill the Troll -- complete with tusks). There was also a normal wedding happening at the same time, and former president Bush was also at the hotel. The secret service people had some issues with the people carrying swords, but eventually started helping with crowd control. Guests would come in, and some of the guards would be surprised, but the others would say things like "It's ok, the fairies are with the Trolls".

Judging by the picture, Bob definitely looks like he was larger than life! And that great story about his wedding (Love the "fairies are with the Trolls"!) says a lot about the kind of man he was too. I think it's wonderful that everyone is going to follow his wishes and wear bright colours and extravagant garb to the wake. It seems like an appropriate way to show your respect and remember Bob.
